In spite of the challenges the Legacy Community members faced, their resilience and commitment to their community are clear in their attitudes and history. Their stories are filled with memories of not just their families, but their communities as a whole. Many of these communities were tightly-knit, often formed by enslaved and emancipated people, providing each other with support. These people were the primary hub for economic activity and social support in a nation that sought to take away its prosperity.

Daily life in these communities was centered around community and family. People took care of one another. Residents describe growing up, their neighborhoods were close-knit and quiet, where doors were left unlocked. Having this type of “open-door policy” was just a normal part of the community culture. These communities endured tragedy, discrimination, and disinvestment, but because of the commitment of community members, they were able to create new opportunities for growth.

The residents of each unique community recognize that their stories have value and are looking forward to sharing them.
